Buying Tires Is a Big Decision

A practical guide to season, type, size, and safe mixing decisions before you buy.

What to consider first

Buying tires does not need to be confusing. Start with the right tire for the season, confirm the proper tire type, verify the correct size, and avoid unsafe mixing decisions.

  • >>Choose by season before you choose by price
  • >>Never go smaller than the original equipment size
  • >>Call before changing size or upgrading wheels

Seasonal recommendations

Summer tires perform best in warm weather and should come off when temperatures stay below 7C. All-season tires can cover light snow but are not ideal for regular winter conditions. Winter tires perform best in cold weather and should be removed once temperatures stay above 7C.

Safe tire mixing rules

For front- or rear-wheel-drive vehicles, place the best remaining tread on the rear axle. Never mix radial and bias-ply tires on the same axle. For four-wheel-drive vehicles, keep all four tires matched in size, construction, and tread pattern whenever possible.
